The implementation of a screening tool to assess
delirium in the elderly
sounds like a great project.  Elderly patients are at risk for being misdiagnosed their signs and
symptoms of delirium as psychotic symptoms or “sundowning syndrome” especially
if they have a psychiatric diagnosis (Targum, 2001).  Since working in the psychiatric emergency
room, I had encountered a lot of these instances, where we had to transfer
patients to our medical ER right away. It is crucial to assess and manage delirium in
elderly to reduce morbidity and mortality. The confusion assessment method for
intensive care unit (CAM-ICU) is reported as a screening tool with higher
specificity compared to Delirium Rating Scale-revised version (DRS-R) by Grover
& Kate (2012).
