The Catcher in the RyeIn the novel, “the Catcher in the Rye”, the main character, Holden Caulfield, is shown as a child who is stuck in his own world of pain and depression. Through the novel, Holden is presented as a failure who has many troubles with staying in school. He has been kicked out of four schools due to his lack of motivation and academic success. The story, itself, is narrated through the perspective of Holden. It starts just a couple days before Pencey Prep released their kids out for christmas break. He had nowhere to go and no one to talk to since he knew his parents didn’t want to hear the bad news. Slowly leading him into a path that has changed his whole life as a child. In J.D. Salinger’s book, “the Catcher in the Rye”, Holden Caulfield shows his readers the amount of depression and struggle someone could receive at such a young age by portraying a humans high demand of protection due to being mind/heart broken. As the novel progressed, the readers learned how Allie’s death was painful for Holden due to their strong connection of brotherly love. For example, Allie is someone that Holden talks to when things start to get hard. As Holden calmly walks down the streets of New York, he would sometimes have moments such as, “Every time I’d get to the end of a block I’d make believe I was talking to my brother Allie. I’d say to him, ” Allie, don’t let me disappear. Allie, don’t let me disappear. Allie, don’t let me disappear. Please, Allie” ( Page 198 ). In this passage,it shows us readers how Allie, for most of the part, is being treated as a guardian. As a guardian which will help Holden stay connected to the world. Even though, Allie is the one that is dead, however, he is also the one who is helping Holden overcome his own cliff. Furthermore, Allie’s belongings were something that Holden always kept safe. One example of this would be when Holden says, “Anyway that’s what I wrote Stradlater’s composition about. Old Allie’s baseball mitt” ( Page 39 ). The baseball mitt was a great way for Holden to keep his brother as close as possible to him since the mitt had “poems written all over the fingers and the pocket and everywhere” ( Page 38 ).By using the mitt for the composition, Holden is trying to express the idea of having his brother at his side, since the mitt is something that is very precious to both himself and Allie. Allie’s death was one of the main life changers for Holden.Holden’s lack of ability in motivation continues to get him kicked out of school. This helps demonstrate how education for Holden was something that he didn’t worry about.  One late night, during a football game, Holden goes to Mr. Spencer to talk. They talk for a little but most of the time, Holden was being lectured. One example of this is when Mr. Spencer says, ” Do you not feel any concern for your future, boy?” and Holden responds with, “Oh, i feel some concern for my future, all right. Sure. Sure, I do.” I thought about it for a minute.”But not too much, I guess” ( Page 14 ). Holden tries to show that he is worried about his future, however, he then portrays that he does not have much care about what comes his way during his lifetime       ( school, friends, family, etc. ). Indicating that Holden is pushing aside his education and future due to minimal concern. Later in the story, it also describes how Holden goes and talks to Mr. Antolini. However, this talk was much different then the talk between Holden and Mr. Spencer. During this talk, Mr. Antolini didn’t lecture him but, however, did try to help Holde figure out his life. For example, Mr. Antolini says, “But I think that once you have a fair idea where you want to go, your first move will be to apply yourself in school” ( Page 188,189 ). This shows Mr. Antolini trying to help get Holden’s education and future organized. Trying to make sure that Holden knows that school is important and could be a life changer. However, Holden reacts poorly and responds by correcting Mr. Antolini’s word pronunciation showing us that he is not trying to be successful. Throughout Holden’s young life, he receives multiple lectures to help plan a strong life ahead of him. At the age of 16, Holden’s depression/struggle of growing up lead him into a path of using drugs and thinking about his sexual desire. After being kicked out of Pencey Prep, Holden had been mind broken. He had no one to talk to and had only one plan of taking the train to New York. While in New York, Holden would stay up late nights and hang out at clubs and bars while being depressed and lost. One example to show this would be when Holden describes himself by saying , ” Boy I sat at that goddam bar till around one o’clock or so, getting drunk as a bastard. I could hardly see straight”( Page 150 ). This proves the point that Holden can be called an alcoholic since he drinks non-stoppingly at a young age. Holden is around the age of 16 and has chosen the path of using drugs and not the path of being educated causing him to struggle in life. As the days moved along slowly, Holden began to think about  girls a little too much. He would say that a bar is terrible unless ” you have somebody to dance with”( Page 76 ). This shows us readers that he is trying very hard to please his own sexual desire toward women. In addition, chapters 11 and 13, further show Holden trying to take his depression away by doing something he enjoys doing. One thing Holden strongly enjoys is to talk to girls no matter where he is ( in his room, at the bar, at school, etc. ). Holden’s trip to New York caused him to get hooked on drugs and women.Holden’s struggle of growing up was shown as a major point due to all the numerous things that happen. This causes him to be shown as an immature and heartbroken child. His involvement with his brother Allie’s death, lack of desire for school, drugs, and sexual desire all contribute to causing struggle in his life. Thinking about Allie causes Holden to feel more pain since he thinks that without his brother he cannot live. In addition, due to Holden’s low amount of motivation, he feels that school is a place not needed or helpful for the future. Once Holden gets kicked out of Pencey Prep, he travels to New York where he turns himself into having poor behavior traits such as using drugs and relying on sexual actions. For being only 16 years old, Holden led himself into a path that changed his whole life negatively.
