The human race has held onto the ancient concept of human personality continuing in some form when life ends. Transitioning from life to death in established societies, death typically is referred to as an alternate change of status. Those that have experienced a near death experience (NDE) consists of an assortment of awareness revealed  by individuals that have practically passed away  or have been resuscitated  after being clinically dead. In most cases an individual will experience a near death experience if the person finds themselves in a situation with an intense sense of danger or close to death. NDE have often been reported and the vonceneisus is many come to with a greater appreciation of life and relationships. When introducing the possibilities of some type of existence following mortal death, theories and scientific findings associated with near-death experiences are examined. The various elements  typically experienced when one has a NDE are grouped into four elements consisting of the cognitive, affective, paranormal and transcendental element. During the cognitive element it is quite normal to have a different perception of time, an increase in one’s way of thinking, and life evaluation.  A sensation of being surrounded by light and peace, infused with the a joyous feeling and cosmic unity are  experienced in the affective element. In the paranormal element an out of body experience is felt, with senses becoming more sensitive than before, mixed with extrasensory perception ( ESP ).  During the transcendental element one may experience some other world and mystical beings. Those that have survived ordeals  such as these often account to a fear of death ceasing. The survivors may conclude that death may not equate to an end but the unfolding of a new beginning. The frequency with which the various elements or features are experienced  differs in near death experiences. According to a research conducted by Ken Ring, a NDE investigator, his experiment generated a  varying distribution. The research concluded sixty percent of people experienced a sense of peace while thirty- seven percent of people experienced the light. Twenty-three percent of individuals entered the tunnel in hopes of ” the light” awaiting them at the end. Ten percent recalled having experienced glimpses of the afterlife and 5 percent having a life review.  The focus here is geared towards valuing the beauty of life and appreciating the time left on Earth. Opposed to placing a great deal of energy on what happens after death, the emphasis here is having a newfound appreciation for their present life. Near death experiences are interpreted into three main theories. The neuropsychological, psychological and the metaphysical theories . Neuropsychological refers to physiological causes while psychological includes fantasies and metaphysical theories calls attention to soul travel.  When this takes place a consciousness shift happens. This shift produces a different outlook on the interpretation of life and death. Most people  who experience an NDE find themselves having a higher degree of appreciation of life and relationships. I believe this is the result of having the opportunity to experience a second chance. The complexity surrounding a  NDE is not a subject matter to be taken lightly. The debate on the subject if there is life after death continues to be the center of a great deal of controversy. The main objective here should be we should all treasure all the components that life brings because we will never know when that time will end.
