Video games
have dominated mankind for about 7 decades. Even before the very existence of
GameBoy, video games have already been a great sensation ever since William
Higinbotham’s invention, Tennis for Two’s
was released and was soon recognized a few decades later. However famous they
may have been for their entertainment value, and still are, many are yet to
recognize their contribution to human health. In other words, people may be unaware
that video games are actually beneficial to health and wellbeing because they
enhance cognitive development and can be an educational tool.

First of
all, as strange as it may seem, it has been proven by scientists that a gamer’s
cognitive development is much sharper and greater than that of an average
person. Many would disagree with this statement as there are still a great number
of intelligent people who possess good cognitive skills due to advance learning
and such. However, the article of the American Journal of Play written by researchers
Adam Eichenbaum, Daphne Bavelier, and C. Shawn Green summarizes a demonstration
of long-lasting positive effects of video games on basic mental process such as
perception, attention, memory, and decision-making. Within this article, it is
apparent that video games do enhance cognitive development.

Another
point is that video games can be an educational tool. A study in the University
of Texas has been conducted in November 2012 which yielded unexpected results;
high school sophomore gamers
outperformed college gamers and the medical residents. Still, Sami Kilic
insisted that students interested in medicine should still focus on academics. However,
a separate study found that surgeons who played video games for at least 3
hours a week saw 37% fewer mistakes during laparoscopic surgery. Certainly,
this study proves that video games can be used as an instrument for
education.

All in all,
video games are often taking the blame for one’s unproductivity when actually
they benefit us in different aspects. It may seem that they’re only built for
the purpose of entertainment, but learning from these evidences, I can confirm that
video games are educational and good of our wellbeing. If you are in need of a
better learning tool, would you play video games?
